Bowl
Description:
The honeycomb pattern on this bowl was made by facet-cutting. To do this, the bowl was blown and cooled then the surface was ground down with a wheel at regular intervals to make the pattern. Only strong or thick glass can be cut with facets. Lead barium was used in Chinese glass to make it strong.
Facet-cutting on glass was done in the Middle East from about 700A.D. and it was popular in later times for lead glass in England and Ireland.
