Lime kiln on beach.Lime was needed to mix in to make mortar for building and also used to clear impurities when boiling up sugar cane (refining sugar). Lime was made on the beach by burning (sea) shells.

Mountravers , on the island of Nevis in the Caribbean, was one of the plantations belonging to the Pinney family. John Pinney came to live in Bristol in 1783.
