Muster roll for the slave ship, Mercury . The ship left Africa in 1774 for West Africa where 307 enslaved Africans were brought on board the ship. The ship then sailed for Jamaica in the Caribbean and then to Grenada. The ship later returned to Bristol.

The Society of Merchant Venturers is a Bristol-based organisation, which was formed in 1552 as an elite body of merchants involved in overseas trade. The Society still exists today.
