Mention of Stephen Blakesley, a seaman who sailed on board the slave ship, the Matilda , in her voyage from Bristol to West Africa and South Carolina. He was injured in a slave uprising.
The Society of Merchant Venturers is a Bristol-based organisation, which was formed in 1552 as an elite body of merchants involved in overseas trade. The Society still exists today.
