View of the English Fort at Sierra Leone from original sketches by J Beckett. In the 1780s, the growing number of poor black people in London, and the Committee for Relief of Black Poor, formed a plan for resettlement abroad. Sierra Leone was the place chosen and the British government took over organisation of the scheme.
