Description:
Here red glass is overlaid on a background of ‘snowstorm’ glass. The snowstorm effect is created by thousands of bubbles in the clear glass. The carved design includes lotus flowers. The lotus has many symbolic meanings in China and is often associated with Buddhism. It is one of the eight Buddhist ‘precious things’ or ‘charms’ and one of its symbolic meanings is ‘purity’.�

This bottle is in the shape of a double gourd and carved with bats (happiness), clouds (fertility), camellia flowers (spring), bamboo (fortitude), lingzhi fungus (or ‘Plant of Long Life’) and butterflies (joy or a happy marriage). The gourd shape itself is a symbol of long life.

The body of this clear deep blue bottle has been cut with a wheel to make a lotus bud design. The lotus flower was an important Buddhist symbol. Because the lotus grows out of muddy water yet remains clean it is a symbol of purity. The flower is also symbolises harmony as the Chinese word for lotus (he) sounds the same as the word for harmony.
