Description:

In this snuff bottle two types of red glass have been moulded together to look like red lacquer (or possibly marble). The bottle is shaped like a bottle-gourd, a hard-shelled fruit traditionally used in China as a container for medicine. The gourd shape became a symbol for health, appropriate here as snuff-taking was thought to be good for the health.

This bottle and stopper are carved in colourless glass imitating rock crystal. Snuff bottles made of rock crystal were very expensive, this glass was cheaper and easier to make, although it still required a lot of skill.

On one side of this one is a female immortal, perhaps Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West. On the other side is a long-tailed bird, both designs symbolise immortality and long life.

They put the snuff powder on the back of one of their long fingernails and snuffed it up their nose. Chinese gentlemen grew long nails to show that they did not use their hands in manual labour.
