Vase

Vase

Description:

This vase came into the museum as Chinese but its baluster shape and marbled finish suggests that it is European. The finish seems to have been made using a technique called lithyalin, patented by Friedrich Egermann (1777-1864) in Bohemia (today’s Czech Republic) during the 1820s. Its popularity lasted only into the 1850s after which production stopped.

Vase

Vase

Description:

Although this piece bears a Chinese reign-mark, the style suggests that it is not Chinese. The elongated form and decoration look identical to Art Nouveau pieces produced by the Daum Frres workshops of Nancy, France in the 1910s. Original Daum pieces always carry a signature, which this piece does not have. It may be an imitation that was taken to China and later had a reign-mark added to increase its value.

Height: 29.5 cm, diameter: 7.8 cm, neck diameter: 2.9 cm
Six-character sealscript mark of Qianlong reign period (1736-1795), later in date
