This is a copy of a bronze gu wine beaker. It has a band around the middle like a gu and flares slightly at the top and bottom. The deep colour is made by layering dark blue glass over lighter blue glass.

Snuff bottle
Description:
This was probably made in Boshan, a well-known centre for glass-making in Shandong Province, to the south-west of Beijing. In this area a design of Chinese cabbage means “Love each other for a hundred years”. bai nian hao he. Therefore a snuff bottle like this might make a good wedding present.

Brush-washer for calligraphy
Description:
This is shaped like a lotus leaf with a lotus flower curling around the outside. Because lotuses grow in water it makes sense to use the plant as a design on a container for water. The lotus is a symbol of purity because it grows pure and fresh out of muddy water.
Buddhists likened lotuses to the Buddha who was born in an imperfect world but rose above it. The lotus is also the symbol of an educated man who follows the philosophy of Confucius.

This snuff bottle is decorated with the ‘Hundred Antiques’ design. For educated people the design summed up their enjoyment of antiques and history. They particularly admired antique bronze vessels, shaped like the ones here. Bronze weathers to a dull green so the green layer of glass works well.
