Shou vase
Description:
This circular blue design is the Chinese character shou which stands for long life. Artists showed the symbol in many different ways on Chinese objects. Shou characters also feature on three cups in the collection: N4734, N4735 and N4736.

Yingxiong snuff bottle
Description:
The eagle and bear (with a long nose) make a visual pun meaning ‘heroic’ (yingxiong). Above them flies a bat, a symbol of happiness. The fisherman represents one of the ‘Four basic occupations’, the others being that of the woodcutter, the peasant and the scholar.

Symbolic vase
Description:
All the motifs on this vase have symbolic meanings:
Bats stand for happiness because in Chinese the words for bat (fu) and happiness (fu) sound the same. Magic fungus is a symbol of long life because people thought those who ate it would live longer. The flowers and fruits on this vase also have�symbolic meanings. Peony stands for beautiful women and good fortune and camellia stands for regeneration. The chrysanthemum flower is a symbol of autumn because that is when it flowers. It also symbolises long life and a happy retirement. Peaches stand for long life as eating them was meant to give you immortality and Buddha’s hand citron stands for happiness.
Finally, the butterfly on this vase symbolises a doubling of all the other� good wishes

Trinket box in the shape of a peach
Description:
This box might have been used to hold small personal items such as jewellery. The peach shape and peach tree leaf sprays symbolise long life. The carved bat is a symbol of happiness (because the words for bat and happiness sound the same in Chinese). The colour of the glass looks like dark green jade.

Description:
This was filled with water and used for washing the ink off a brush when doing calligraphy or painting. The design of plum blossom is symbolic of spring and renewal.

Box in aventurine glass
Description:
Glass with gold speckles like this was made to imitate aventurine, a quartz with reflective particles. In Chinese it was called ‘golden star’ glass. According to records of the Imperial workshop this type of glass was first made in 1741 and continued to be made in substantial quantities until 1758.
