Vase 1800-1900, Qing dynasty
Description:
To make this vase, tiny pieces of coloured glass were placed onto the molten white glass. Then it was probably rolled against a flat iron or marble surface (a marver) to press the colours into the white glass before it was blown into shape. The dragon design was carved into the surface with a wheel after the glass had fully cooled.

Snuff bottle, inside-painted
Description:
This snuff bottle is made of clear glass. The enamelled design of a landscape and flowers is painted on the inside. This was done using a very small bamboo brush bent at the tip that could be pushed into the top of the bottle and used to paint the design.
This technique required a lot of skill and patience. A painter could produce only about seven hundred bottles in their lifetime before their eyesight and co-ordination deteriorated.

Qianlong Vase
Description:
This vase uses seven different colours of glass. Molten sticks of coloured glass were applied to the white body of the vase to give patches of different colours on the vase’s surface. This technique is called marquetry. The coloured glass was then carved into the design of fish swimming among water plants, a symbol of abundance. Jade carvers sometimes worked jade in a similar way, using the different colours in the ‘skin’ of the jade pebble to pick out their design.
