Cup
Description:
This cup is slightly translucent and looks like jade (jadeite). It would have been much cheaper and easier to produce in glass. This colour of glass is known in the west as ‘clair de lune’ (moonlight). In Chinese it is known as ‘moon white’.

This two-handled cup is similar to bronze vessels called gui. In ancient times gui were used to hold food for ritual use. Handles on ancient bronze vessels were often made in the shape of animal heads, those on this glass cup are in the shape of dragons.

One of a pair of octagonal cups
Description:
The diamond-engraved flower sprays in each panel depict the Flowers of the Four Seasons: prunus, camellia, peony and lotus. Diamond point engraving was fashionable in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. European craftsmen probably introduced the technique to China.
Some experts have suggested that these cups fit the description of some cups on a list of presents sent to the King of Portugal by the Kangxi emperor in 1722 “Eight small cups with flower [pattern], the colour of blue sky after rain.”
