Minutes of a Committee meeting, 15th April 1789.
The Committee set up to oppose the abolition of the slave trade proposed three petitions to Parliament. One was from the West India merchants, planters, sugar bakers, annuitants and creditors. One was from African merchants and one was from manufacturers and others.

The Society of Merchant Venturers is a Bristol-based organisation, which was formed in 1552 as an elite body of merchants involved in overseas trade. The Society still exists today.

Minutes of a meeting held at the Merchants Hall, Bristol, 13th April 1789.
Record of a meeting held to consider the steps to be taken to oppose the threat of the abolition of the slave trade. A committee was set up to liase with the Society of Merchant Venturers and the Committee of London Merchants, to prepare petitions, encouraging all merchants to support them and to ask for support from MPs.

The Society of Merchant Venturers is a Bristol-based organisation, which was formed in 1552 as an elite body of merchants involved in overseas trade. The Society still exists today.

The American War of Independence and war with France, Spain and Holland affected trade. Only 2 of the 145 ships in 1778 – 1779 went to the USA, and none to France. The majority are going to the Caribbean islands of English and Irish ports.

Every merchant sailor contributed a small amount per voyage towards an insurance fund, administered in Bristol by the Society of Merchant Venturers. This page lists a number of ships coming back from Jamaica, Antigua, Barbados, Virginia, St Kitts and Tortola, as well as from European, English and Irish ports.
