Crewmember not to be paid anymore
Description:
Detail from a page of the Minutes of the Seamen’s Hospital Committee for 6 September 1758. The case of William Cuzzins was reviewed. The decision was made that he justly forfeited his right to his pension and was not to be paid anymore. Cuzzins had been hit in the eye by a fellow crew member on his ship the Alexander on a slaving voyage to Africa (See Id number 2359). The pension may have been stopped in 1755 when his wife Jane failed to appear at a meeting of the Trustees to put the case for continuing the pension.

Widow of carpenter on slave ship

Mention of Elizabeth Lackworthy, widow of Harry Lackworthy, carpenter on board slave ship Hope from Bristol.

Jane Cuzzins, widow of William Cuzzins
Description:
Entry in the Minute Book of the Seaman’s Hospital Fund, re an update of the claim of Jane Cuzzins, dated Dec 2nd 1755. The note mentions that she did not appear at the meeting and the pension was stopped. It is assumed that she was the wife of seaman William Cuzzins, who was awarded a pension for loss of sight. William Cuzzins wrote to the Trustees in 1758, when the decision to stop his pension was upheld. The Fund was an insurance fund for sailors and their families.

Seaman injured on slave ship
Description:
Mention of Stephen Blakesley, a seaman who sailed on board the slave ship, the Matilda , in her voyage from Bristol to West Africa and South Carolina. He was injured in a slave uprising.

Widow - husband killed on slave ship
Description:
Mention in minute book of Ann Hancock (and her child) recently widowed by her husband who was killed whilst onboard the slave ship the Juba, from Bristol. The incident occured during a slave uprising. The widow is petitioning for money from the Society of Merchant Venturers.
