Muster roll for the ship, the Brothers , sailing from Africa, 1787.
The Brothers was presumably a wood vessel, sailing directly between Bristol and Sierra Leone in Africa. It carried a cargo of tropical hardwoods for the shipbuilding and timber trades.
The muster roll is a list of all crew signed on for all or part of a voyage, which was used to calculate the money each man should pay to the Sailors’ Hospital Fund (insurance).
The Society of Merchant Venturers is a Bristol-based organisation, which was formed in 1552 as an elite body of merchants involved in overseas trade. The Society still exists today.

Muster roll for the ship, the Royal Charlotte , sailing from Bristol to Africa and the West Indies and from thence to Bristol, 1788.
The Royal Charlotte sailed from Bristol with orders to buy 450 or 460 slaves. It is not known how many were actually bought and sold at St Vincent, in the Caribbean.

James Arnold was surgeon aboard the Ruby . He wrote an account of the voyage for the Abolitionist campaigner, Thomas Clarkson. Arnold gave evidence to the 1788 Parliamentary committee which investigated the slave trade. Arnold gave evidence about how slaves were captured and bought and the conditions on board the ship.

The African Queen was a wood vessel belonging to Sidenham Teast and Company, shipbuilders. It returned to Bristol direct from Africa , with a cargo of tropical hardwoods. The whole voyage took almost 17 months.

This was one of several ships called the Africa . On this voyage, the Africa traded along the Gold Coast and sailed with 354 slaves. It is not known how many were sold at Grenada.
