John Matthews, the ship’s master, died on 5th April 1769.

The slave ship Wells left Bristol in 1766 for the Coast of Guinea (West Africa), then to St Kitts in the Caribbean and back to Bristol. The ship was later sold and rebuilt in Bristol.
It was renamed African Queen before its next voyage to Africa in1770.
