The captain of The Minerva was Nicholas Pocock, the artist and sailor who drew pictures of ships featuring slave trading on the coast of Africa, shown elsewhere on this site. One of the crew, James Chilsom, is described as a negro .

The William and Mary spent 3 months or more in St Vincents, unloading its cargo of foodstuffs and manufactured goods, and finding a return cargo of sugar.

The Phoenix left Bristol for Africa and Jamaica, but seems to have gone to Dominica. The number of slaves bought and sold is not known. Ten of the crew died, and three deserted on the voyage.

The Minehead was a merchant trading ship. The cargo from Nevis would have been sugar, rum and molasses. Two of the crew are listed as Never att sea before.

The Betsey made one slaving voyage from February to September 1773. By December 1773, she was ready to sail again on another slaving voyage, with 128 slaves from the Gambia advertised for sale in South Carolina.

Death and desertion were common amongst the crews of slaving ships. Of The Catherine’s crew, 5 died and 10 deserted. The number of slaves purchased in Africa is not known, but tax was paid on 237 in South Carolina.

The Gambia was a small ship and so had a small crew for the 170 slaves advertised for sale in South Carolina. Several of the crew had previously sailed in slaving ships such as The King George , Hungerford , or Cornwall .

Muster roll for the ship, the Betsy from Bristol to Africa, St Christopher and Bristol, 1771.
Two ships named the Betsy sailed for Africa in 1771. This, the larger ship, lost 21 crew on the voyage to St Kitts. The number of enslaved Africans bought and sold not known.
