The long length of the voyage (October 1771 – February 1773), and the large number of crew listed out, are clues to the fact that this is the last leg of a slaving voyage.
The Hector was under orders to buy 360 slaves in Angola, West Africa. 300 were advertised for sale in South Carolina.

The Blaze Castle belonged to Samuel Munckley, a merchant who traded with the colonies. Two boys in the crew were paid no wages.

Muster roll for the ship, the African Queen , 1792.
The African Queen sailed from Bristol for Old Calabar, West Africa, with over £5,000 worth of trade goods. 21 of the 37 crew died at the African coast of fever or dysentery. A large number of slaves died at the coast and during the Atlantic crossing, with reports varying from 142 to 116. The survivors were not in good condition.

Muster roll for the ship, the Daniel .
The Daniel left Bristol for Old Calabar and shipped 146 or 142 slaves. 125 died during a bad voyage to Grenada, and the survivors were in a very poor state. They sold for very little. The Daniel then returned to Africa and bought another 211 slaves, and landed 171 in Jamaica for sale.

The Jupiter left Bristol for Bonny, West Africa. Reports give different numbers of slaves bought and sold. Either 379 or 389 had been taken across the Atlantic to Jamaica. 355 Eboe (an ethnic group) slaves were advertised in the local papers for sale.

Muster Roll for the ship, the Mermaid , 1792,
The Mermaid left Bristol for the Gambia, buying probably 159 slaves. The ship had 23 crew: 16 died of fever whilst on the African coast. 19 of the slaves died during a slave rebellion on board.
The 128 slaves who survived the Atlantic crossing were sold in Grenada.
