The Rodney sailed from Bristol for a voyage to Africa for slaves; to Old Calabar in West Africa. 343 enslaved Africans were landed in Jamaica for sale. It is not known how many were bought in Old Calabar and how many died on the voyage.

The muster roll is a list of all crew signed on for all or part of a voyage, which was used to calculate the money each man should pay to the Sailors Hospital Fund (insurance).

The Society of Merchant Venturers is a Bristol-based organisation, which was formed in 1552 as an elite body of merchants involved in overseas trade. The Society still exists today.

The addresses of the crew are given in detail, rather than just saying Bristol . Thus, George Merrick, master, lived in St Nicholas Hill in Bristol, his officers in Orchard Street and Back Street, Bristol. Other crew members lived in less salubrious (pleasant, clean, and healthy to live in) areas of Bristol, near the docks, such as Marsh Street.

The surgeon on board the ship was Alexander Falconbridge. He had last served on another slaving ship, the Emilia . In 1788 he gave evidence to a Parliamentary committee investigating the slave trade.

Part of muster roll for the ship, the Elizabeth from Barbados.
The master, Nichols Pocock, was also an artist. He drew the ship’s portraits , which show scenes of Tradeing on ye coast of Africa and probably had served on slaving ships before taking command of merchant ships trading from Bristol to the Caribbean.
