One of the crew taken on in Bristol was John Davis, a Black born in Africa. He was discharged in Africa at his own request, on 28th July.

The language used to describe people of African descent in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries is unacceptable in today’s terms. We cannot avoid using this language in its original context. To change the words would impose 20th century attitudes on history.

Reverse of muster roll for the ship, The Britannia , from Africa and Jamaica, 1772. This was the ship’s first voyage. Three of the crew seem to have drowned on 20th January 1773, in Jamaica.

Description:

Ships’ muster rolls from 29th Sept 1763 – 29th Sept 1764; Society of Merchant Venturers’ archive.
Muster roll no: 57.

Hospital bill for the slave ship Greyhound, 1763.
The ship sailed from Bristol to Bonny, West Africa, where 410 or more enslaved Africans were purchased. The Greyhound then sailed to Nigeria, USA, where the slaves would have been sold. The ship returned to Bristol.

Description:

From ships’ muster roll book, 29th September 1772 – 29th September 1773; Society of Merchant Venturers’ archive.
Muster roll for the ship, the King George, 1771. Muster roll no: SMV 33.
There were three ships with this name employed in the slave trade. This was the largest of the three. On this voyage, the King George left Bristol for Old Calabar, West Africa, and returned via Jamaica. There are no records of the number of slaves bought and sold.

Three of the crew were lost on ye coast of Africa : two others were taken on in Africa. The Caribbean islands and, to a lesser extent the coast of Africa, were temporary home to many British and European sailors discharged from their ships and looking for a ship to get home.
