Description:
Page from the Minutes of the Trustees for the Seamen’s Hospital for 6 February 1750. The first petitioner for help was William Cuzzins, who lost his sight on board a Bristol ship. He was awarded a pension of 3/6d per week.
The Society of Merchant Venturers is a Bristol-based organisation, which was formed in 1552 as an elite body of merchants involved in overseas trade. The Society still exists today.

Mention in minute book of Merchant Seamens’ Hospital Orders , 1747-1769, of Robert Barker (carpenter on the Thetis ), who lost his sight on board a Bristol slaving ship.
Barker was awarded a pension of 3/6d a week.
