The Mansfield Declaration
Description:
Newspaper report of Lord Mansfield’s finding in the Somerset court case. He declared that it was illegal for a slave to be forced out of England by their owner, back to the plantations, against their will. He carefully avoided ruling on whether slavery was legal or not in England.
