Jack, a named slave

Description:

Jack, one of the earliest photographs of a named slave, 1850. Jack was an enslaved African from the Guinea coast. He was a driver, or slave overseer, for Mr B F Taylor of Columbia, South Carolina. This is one of many photographs taken for a scientist who wished to prove that different races were separate species, and thus disprove Darwin’s theory of evolution

Description:

Wax relief of Rev Thomas Biddulph. Biddulph was vicar of St James’ Church, Bristol, in 1800, and then moved on to be the first vicar of St Matthew’s Church, Cotham, Bristol. He was on the Committee of the Bristol Anti-Auxiliary Anti-Slavery Society, founded in 1823. An ardent Evangelical, he actively supported the emancipation of slaves (end of slavery) in British terrirtories in the 1820s, whilst opposing political equality for Catholics at home
